The most successful lesson I thought is teaching year 10 with the competence of speaking skill. It was design as performances of live language where students working in a group to express and perform not only transactional dialogue but interpersonal dialogue as well. The students were very enthusiastic to design their own role in the dialogue because they know exactly what they doing from the clues given for the activities and for the assessment as well. Here is the outline.
The first thing to do to design the lesson is to consult the curriculum based competence to determine the standard competence in teaching. In my lesson plan I focus on speaking. As we know that in senior high school in Indonesia for X grade the students must learn five text types: Descriptive, Narrative, Recount, Procedure, News Item. In this occasion I choose the standard competence for grade X for senior high school, to understand the meaning of dialogue text in descriptive, it describes a particular person, place, and thing. Generally teachers use the old method that is pronunciation drill, reading dialogue and performing In front of class. But in this occasion I use different method is that “How to perform live language”, the time allotment is 3x45 minutes.
After determining the standard competence I have to make the indicators for teaching, they are indentifying dialogue text in descriptive to apply into live language, completing the tables in the worksheet given with relevant information. The next step in my lesson plan is, determining the learning objective. I would like to get the students into the habit of oral expression, to enable the students using appropriate term, and to get them to have good self confidence. In this lesson I focus on the benefit of live language as the medium for learning and it elaborates how to get the students to produce their own way on expressing their selves. It means that at the end of the lesson students are able to perform a dialogue in live language. My method in teaching English this time is cooperative learning and live language performance.
The next steps in making lesson plan are to describe Pre, whilst and Post Teaching. Pre teaching is done at the beginning of the lesson and meant for arousing the students motivation and focusing the students attention, so they can participate actively during the lesson, In this activities I use brainstorming to get the students to have good understanding on live language by asking some questions orally about name, age, hometown, address, family, hobbies, favorite food and music.
The next step is whilst teaching, it means the main learning process and aimed at achieving the basic competency, in whilst teaching I facilitate the students to work in a group of 3 or 4 students to design a live performance consisting of pre (greeting), content (describe object: person or things), and closing (leave-taking.) and perform in front of the class. While I have to make an evaluation to assess the students based on the indicators for competency achievement and refer to standard evaluation in this lesson plan I use rubric holistic in giving the score, The rubric gives score by figuring the aspects of skills for Accent, Grammar, Vocabulary, Fluency , and Comprehension. To visualize my knowledge I place the learning resource in my lesson plan from some source such as books and Wikipedia from the internet related to competency that I am teaching.
By the end of the lesson I conclude that lesson plan plays very important role in teaching, it should be fun and enjoyable for teachers and students, the teacher plays important role in designing and providing this level of applicative based learning. I personally believe that teaching English focus on speaking skill using live language performance is one most effective technique in learning English. It is more to motivate our learners practice. This technique goes to the short term category and the students are required to work collaboratively with their group to have their English more practical and at the end they have more confidence with their English.
